On 1 May TopTV launched in South Africa, changing the Pay TV landscape forever. With 50 000 decoders selling out on the first day it was clear South Africans needed and wanted choice.

The overwhelming response from the public resulted in a few operational problems, but the management and staff at TopTV faced these head-on, acting upon them immediately in order to deliver a better service. The new Pay TV provider is committed to providing quality entertainment at affordable prices and is home to channels exclusive to the platform, including BET (Black Entertainment TV), Natura, Current TV, Discovery ID, JimJam, as well as several Fox channels. TopTV is also home to some popular channels already in SA, including the Discovery Science and Travel & Living channels and KidsCo.

The launch of TopTV means more channels and programmes for Pay TV in South Africa. Local and international content providers now have an additional platform on which to broadcast their content, and TopTV is currently in discussions with additional channels, bringing more variety and quality programmes to the consumer.

Upcoming highlights that subscribers can look forward to in the next few months include the brilliant Dexter, True Blood, The Sopranos and Brothers and Sisters, popular movies like The Jane Austen Book Club, Shooter and Transformers, much-loved kiddies shows, from Paddington Bear to Thomas and Friends and Bob the Builder as well as thought provoking documentaries.

TopTV aims to make the subscribers TV viewing experience enjoyable, from programming obligatory repeats in a way that allows the subscriber the opportunity to plan in advance, to the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide), which provides schedules and programme information with the click of a button. Functions on the remote control include auto tuning, setting reminders, selecting favourite channels and genres as well as parental control options, to name a few. TopTV will launch its PVR functionality in 2011.
